3 Exercises To Improve Strength For Horseback Riding

As a horseback rider, you understand the importance of strength and flexibility in maintaining control and coordination in the saddle.

Incorporating exercises such as planks, lunges, and side stretches into your fitness routine can help you improve these qualities and improve your horseback riding performance.

  • Planks are an excellent exercise for core strength, essential for maintaining proper posture and balance while horseback riding. Start in a push-up position with your hands shoulder-width apart and your feet hip-width apart to do a plank. Pull your belly button towards your spine to engage your core, and hold this position for 30 seconds to a minute. As you gain strength, you can hold the plank for extended periods or experiment with variations like side planks or plank with alternating leg lifts.

  • Lunges are an excellent exercise for strengthening the legs, essential for maintaining horse control. Step forward with one leg and lower your body until your thigh is parallel to the ground to perform a lunge. Return to the starting position by pushing through the heel of your front foot, and then repeat on the other side. You can add weight by holding dumbbells or a barbell to make the exercise more challenging.

  • Side stretches are an excellent way to increase flexibility and improve your range of motion while horseback riding. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and raise your arms above your head to perform a side stretch. Reach out with both arms to one side, keeping your legs straight and your core engaged. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds to a minute, and then switch sides. To add another level of difficulty, try standing on one leg.
